National Launch Recap - August 2018

We are incredibly excited to announce that the Speak My Language program has officially been launched!

The Speak My Language program was launched by the Minister for Aged Care and Minister for Indigenous Health, the Honourable Ken Wyatt AM MP on Wednesday 22nd August, 2018. The event took place in the beautiful Mural Hall, at Parliament House in Canberra.

The Honourable Ken Wyatt AM MP was most gracious, staying for the entire event to partake in the proceedings. He was very much involved in the interactive activities, and spent time informally chatting to guests and taking photographs with them. The Speak My Language team was humbled to receive the warm support of over 120 diverse guests, on the day, who travelled from all across Australia to celebrate with us.

At the launch Minister Ken Wyatt said,

"Talking about aged care and navigating the aged care system can be daunting for older Australians and their families, particularly those from diverse backgrounds."

"Innovative, community-based programs like this will undoubtedly make the journey easier for many of our most treasured citizens."

ECCQ CEO Garry Page says he is very excited to support community radio and aged care service provider partners to deliver the Speak My Language program in Queensland. "Through out community care branch, Diversicare, ECCQ will roll out up to 23 radio programs in different languages across Queensland. Older people will have an opportunity to hear and share stories about ageing in their language."

"These stories and conversations can have a huge impact by helping to overcome barriers and increase knowledge of appropriate services and healthy living."

ECCV Policy Officer Nikolaus Rittinghausen says, "The Speak my Language project has been a very collaborative project from the beginning as we have been able to work closely across different States and Territories. I believe that this collaborative approach has been one of our most significant achievements. The Speak My Language project has advanced magnificently since its inception ECCV looks forward to continuing this partnership journey."

Director of Audio and Language Content SBS, Ms Mandi Wicks says, "SBS Radio is passionate about being involved with the Speak My Language program."

"Radio is such a personal medium, which connects one on one, and we hope through the power of individual stories in languages other than English, to make a difference to the lives of thousands of Australians."

Russell Anderson CEO of NEMBC says, "The launch of Speak My Language in Parliament House was a display of how this project is so unique. It's not just a model for Government to distribute accurate aged care information."

"It's a unique media model combining three media sectors (commercial, SBS and Ethnic Community Media) which will result in a comprehensive reach to not thousands but potentially millions of culturally and linguistically diverse people."

CEO of the ECCNSW, Mary Karass, and Chair of the ECCNSW, Marta Terraciano, applauded all the partners, Bilingual Facilitators, Radio Programs and Consumers, and encourage our communities to contact the ethnic councils in their state to get involved.

"There are so many stories which need to be heard, and we look forward to providing this wonderful platform which will give a voice to our CALD seniors. We applaud the work of Terrie Leoleos in leading this program as the National Manager, and the team behind her both within our ECCNSW staff, and the staff of the partners involved."

"There is no doubt that we are off to a great start with the Speak My Language program and we watch with interest to see the program build momentum over the next 12 months."
